Roy Hodgson has appointed Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, as the new skipper of the England national team.
The 28-year-old replaces Steven Gerrard, who retired from international football after England’s exit from the 2014 World Cup.
Rooney has made 95 appearances for the Three Lions and scored 40 times. He was also named United captain by Louis van Gaal earlier this month.
England face Norway on September 3 in a friendly game, before they begin their Euro 2016 qualifiers in Switzerland on September 8.
On his decision to appoint Rooney, Hodgson said: “I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne is an obvious choice.
“He deserves it. He has captained England in the past and has that responsibility at Manchester United.
