UBTH bows to pressure, releases young woman detained for 6 months over unpaid hospital bills after losing her baby

The Management of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has released a young woman who was detained in the hospital for six months over unpaid bills.

It was gathered that the patient, Bidemi Taiwo was admitted in the hospital on March 23, 2020. She gave birth to a baby boy through cesearan section but lost the child.

Since then authorities of the UBTH detained her over non-payment of the bills said to be over five hundred thousand naira.

A lawyer, Jefferson Woghiren who took up the case, confirmed the latest development on Saturday, October 31.

"Breaking!!!! University Of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Benin finally submitted to superior reason this morning, as Miss Bidemi Taiwo, has been Ordered to leave the hospital. We demand the release of other similarly imprisoned patients. Poverty is not a crime" he wrote.

Bidemi's father, a peasant farmer Mr Sunday Oyebamiji has thanked the management of the UBTH for their magnanimity in writing off the debt which, as at August 2020, accrued to about six hundred thousand Naira. He also appreciated Mr Jefferson and his team for their support.

Meanwhile, Mr Jefferson in a statement issued in Benin City on October 29, said that it is a criminal offense to detain a patient over a civil debt without court order.

"It is a criminal offense to detain a patient, in a hospital, by hospital management, or their agents, due to debts accumulated by a patient, in consequences of health care treatment. Nobody, I repeat, nobody is permitted to detain a debtor, over a civil debt, without the order of court, which is unlawful," the statment reads.

"The management of UBTH, Benin City, is liable in law, for false imprisonment, emotional distress and agony, in a civil action, and of kidnapping, assault and breach of public peace in a criminal charge. A patient and doctor relationship is contractual, bound by the Law of Contract

"Doctors offer services to patients in legitimate expectations of payments. Breaches or Inability to fulfill contractual obligations, cannot result in the detention and imprisonment of one party, in a private facility, by the other, personally or by their agents, in consequences of same

"There is no law, that makes services provided by doctors, either public or private, exceptional, and above the Law of Contract. Let this victim of this idiotic, seasonal and reprehensible breach of rights, now languishing in UBTH Prison, get a lawyer, and sue the Honorable Minister of Health, The CMD of UBTH, and Matron, directly in charge of her detention for the past six months, following her inability to fully pay her hospital bill. #SHAMEUBTH Enough is Enough."

Soldiers stop Lagos judicial panel from accessing military mortuary to investigate Lekki tollgate shooting (videos)

Soldiers stop Lagos judicial panel from accessing military mortuary to investigate Lekki tollgate shooting (videos)

Soldiers manning the gate at the Military Hospital in Ikoyi prevented the Lagos judicial panel on End SARS from accessing the hospital’s mortuary as they investigate Lekki tollgate shooting.

The panel visited the hospital unannounced on Friday, October 30,  to carry out an investigation into the shooting at Lekki tollgate where 15 protesters were reportedly killed.

Some witnesses of the Lekki shooting claimed the military had taken away bodies of those killed in the incident.

To investigate this allegation, the judicial panel visited the Military hospital in Ikoyi but met resistance at the gate of the hospital.

Ebun Adegboruwa, a member of the panel, told the soldiers, who stopped them at the gate, that the panel came to the hospital because it had intelligence that might help with its investigation.

"The facility is relevant to our investigation. We have a pathologist. We are here on the authority of the president, not only the governor," he told journalists

"We are following due process, and it is important we visit the mortuary as it will help our findings.

"If we are not allowed access, we will go back and take other actions. We won’t force ourselves in. We have confidential information that the military hospital here is relevant in the investigation of the Lekki event.

"We heard this hospital is controlled by 65 battalion and under the 81 division. We are also taking steps to reach military authorities."

Adegboruwa said though the panel does not have evidence that there are bodies of those killed at the tollgate in the hospital, it was at the facility to verify the claim that they were.

He also said the panel will continue its work until it gets to the truth of the matter.

Journalists were asked to leave the hospital premises and one of the soldiers threatened that "things will get dirty" if they refused.

After an initial resistance by the soldiers for about 30 minutes, the panel members were allowed on the hospital premises.

They were then taken to a non-functional mortuary the army claimed was under renovation.

Protect yourselves against attacks- IGP tells police

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has advised police officers across the country to protect themselves against attacks.

Adamu, gave the advice when he visited the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Abuja, today October 30.

The police chief said the officers must protect themselves because they are humans and also have rights. He condemned the #ENDSARS protest and said the demonstration was an attack targeted at the police to demoralise officers.

“The unity of this country lies in the support that is given to police officers because if you are demoralised, the tendency is for criminals to take over the public space and the country is relying on us to make sure that the public space is not taken over by the criminals. So no amount of provocation, no amount of insult would make us shy away from our responsibilities.

Inasmuch as we are aware that the government is behind us; so, we would encourage you to keep performing your duties. We would encourage you to be professional, to be civic, but if anybody touches you, if anybody comes to assault you, you can also protect yourself.

When we talk of human rights, the police are human; so, the rights of police officers would also be protected.” Adamu said

A member of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, incurred the wrath of Nigerian youths on Thursday, October 29, when a recent video of her speaking during plenary went viral.

Mojisola who represents Amuwo-Odofin 1 constituency in the state house of Assembly, called for a reorientation of Nigerian youths because according to her, most of the youths are always on drugs and go on social media to do all sorts.

Some Nigerians stormed her Instagram page to drag her, reminding her that it is the same youths that are ''high on drugs'' that voted her into office.

They took interest in the photos she shared on May 23 2020, where through her staff, she distributed COVID19 palliatives to some elderly women in her constituents on Mothers day. She hashtagged the photos 'giving back', 'giving is fun'.
