The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has requested former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to avail the party with more information before it can decide whether to grant him and two other aspirants waivers to participate in the party’s primaries scheduled for September 6 to pick its flag-bearer for the Adamawa State governorship election.
We learnt that national officials of the PDP could not reach a decision as regards allowing Ribadu, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd), and Marcus Gundiri to unconditionally participate in the primaries after two contentious meetings over the last two days.
All three governorship aspirants had requested that they be granted waivers to enable them vie for the party’s ticket after they recently decamped from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP. But after two marathon meetings at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja and the Presidential Villa, members of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party were unable to agree on whether or not to grant the waivers.
An impeccable source disclosed that the serious disagreements that ensued among the members of the NWC on the issue led to the postponement of the screening of the aspirants that was earlier scheduled to take place in Abuja from Thursday to Saturday, August 30.
The PDP’s NWC, however, was able to establish a subcommittee that includes the party’s national legal adviser, national publicity secretary and national financial secretary to demand more documentation from the PDP’s NorthEast Vice Chairman. The subcommittee has the mandate of requesting more information from Ribadu and other recent defectors to demonstrate that they truly qualify for waivers.
An inside source told DailyPost that the party had to proceed with caution with regards to granting waivers to the defectors so as not to encourage a culture of impunity or cause steadfast and loyal party members to be disenchanted.
While speaking with newshounds in Abuja, the national organizing secretary of the party, Abubakar Mustapha informed that the screening would now take place on Saturday while the names of the screening panel members will be released on Friday.
