TRIBUTES TO Prof. J .U.E Onakewhor....REST IN PEACE....WE LOVE YOU

We heard about your demise August 16 2016...oh death...why ?
He would stay in clinic till 5pm so he can not just see all his patients, but spend quality time with them. He would stand up repeatedly during morning review to ensure the students are being carried along. He would walk to the board and draw a "not very fine" diagram to illustrate what he's trying to say.
He did not practice his profession independent of his Christian faith.
He was a good man.

May his great soul rest in peace
Life have a way of taking the good ones, more aptly put, the departure of the good ones leave great vacuum in our hearts. You recently crossed my mind, on how you were one of the few inspiring teachers in the mist of the peril and struggle of medical school. Humility, a rare character in the medical field was seen in a great in you. I could go on iterating how encouraging you were to me, but I'll stop here thanking God gave me the opportunity to pass through you.
RIP Teacher!
RIP Prof. Onakewhor.

What a loss!
He made us change my mind towards falling in love with Obstetrics and Gynaecology while in medical school. O and G was a course i initially never liked. He emphasized so much on the basics of O and G. He was known for making useful illustrations with drawings on the board - even during Morning Reviews from cases managed the previous night!
He was very energetic and passionate about the profession.
Prof Onakewhor saved so many women and babies from the claws of death. I remember a night we almost had a tragedy in the threatre. The senior doctors who were operating were in disarray over an inability to secure haemostasis from a woman bleeding torrentially. A distress call was sent to Prof who came in with full speed into the theatre. "Give me gloves! somebody give me gloves!!! " He went into the opened abdomen. He even forgot to scrub! He saved the day. That would have been a major maternal mortality that day. Prof Onakewhor!!!
He was a dedicated Christian doctor who held so much to clinical ethics
He was one of our finest medical teachers. The things he taught us during his consultation clinics still remain fresh in my head.
Prof J.U Onakewhor! Rest in blessed peace
What a loss!. Prof Onakewhor!!!

A Man of impeccable rectitude and unimpeachable integrity is gone. We'll miss you!
R.I.P Prof. Onakhewor. #Adieu
The beauty of obstetrics is slain in our highways . How are the mighty fallen! Tell it not to the stuffless. Proclaim it not in the streets of ignorance. Last the frail see it and become depressed. Lest the knowledgeable ones read it and sigh. Oh my professor! One who knew the anatomy of the perineum better than his name. Oh ohnakewor! He has stopped post partum haemorrhage! He held eclampsia spellbound. Who can take this?. Onakewor, the father of PMCT in Nigeria. Onakewor, the teacher of teachers. Onakewor, who sometimes spoke with HIV himself. How can I believe that you are gone? Ubth and uniben can't sleep. The class of diamante is dazed. Because the prof has gone to his eternal home, and the stuffmen dispersed silently. Thou highway , let there be no stuff or dew on you. Because the shield of the mighty was slain there. The shield of the great professor, as though it had not been anointed with information. RIP my teacher.
His passion to make u better knows no limit. I still recall the passionate call he gave my father informing him how un serious his boy was.....my dad was disappointed I guess. But it was worth the call. Although I might not have failed OnG bt I think that act of his inspired me the more to pass OnG....When I met him after I became a doc, he was so happy and impressed....exhorting me further.....he was a fine teacher. Adieu Baba

He made me pass On g when I would av failed courtesy of a grave mistake in d exams. Instead of separating all my answers, I answered them like we routinely do. Dat meant dat only one teacher was goina av my script...hence, I'll be scored for just one answer. When he noticed dat, he personally volunteered to mark my script without raising any dust, and the rest is now history.
He was a fine gentleman par excellence
"This is a learning point.....please, pass me the chalk"
Professor J. Onakhewor

He was a teacher per excellence......Men like this made me still believe in the medical profession when despondency wanted to set in....
I still remember my Obstetric and Gynaecology posting Morning Reviews ......How he made it so impactful and interesting....How he is quick to stand up(especially where there are myriad of opinions about a subject matter), pick up the marker and take us down memory lane to anatomy.....the basics.
He evidently loved his job...his passion for teaching showed it....
Adieu to great teacher, mentor, Father gentleman and a fine Christian Professor J. Onakhewor......you will always live in our hearts!

One of the finest and passionate Prof in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He loved to honour people, I can still remember how he solved an argument during one morning review in 2014 on "IVF as an indication for C-section"
I can honestly say it's a huge loss to the practice of OnG, a huge loss generations who you could not impart knowledge to, a huge loss to humanity. Rest on till we meet again. You live in our hearts sir.
A gentleman per excellence. You Will be greatly missed by the countless number of students you have impacted. Sleep on brother until we meet again at the feet of our lord Jesus Christ when shall all sing the Victory song over death.
It's the saddest day today to learn of the death of my colleague and friend, Professor Joseph Onakewhor - in that death pavilion called the Abuja-Kaduna expressway through a road traffic accident. It's really sad that the road has become an albatross of the high and the mighty without a single effort by our policymakers to deal with the problem(s) on the road. How many more souls are we going to lose on that road before something is done?
Professor Onakewhor is one of the most gentle, highly dutiful and resourceful obstetrician and gynaecologists in this country that I know. He will be missed by all, including by staff of the World Bank Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI) at the University of Benin, for which he was the project coordinator. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen!
Michael (Aziken) where is the marker?... This is for the benefit of the students... The uterus as you can see on the board..... "As a christain you know..... ".* with that boyish smile on his face*.....
It’s quite easy for me to write here and proclaim that every person who ever had Prof Onakewhor as a teacher will tell you that he was the absolute best and most well-liked teacher there ever was in the dept of OnG,Uniben/Ubth. It’s easy for me to make this proclamation because I’ve been hearing it consistently from the time I was in school through today, some four years later, sadly this class of Part IV Medical student would be the last to say that.
You leave behind many very thankful people. Some are thankful to have had you as a part of their family. Many are thankful to have had you as a friend or an acquaintance. We would always be thankful to have had you as a teacher, truly you put meaning to the quote "the great teacher inspires".
It's a sad day for the profession, we just could not do enough,to give little to the man that gave so much.
Who would deliver our pregnant women? What do we do without him? Who would teach the new guideline on Hiv in pregnancy? Who would care for the lives he has already nurtured?
We all felt better with him in this world.
He changed my life, all our lives and planted deep seeds of truth in the soil of medicine that will grow on time.
He was no ordinary teacher and I believe his legacy will reflect this.
RIP Prof Onakewhor
Too sad!. Prof who believed 100% pass was achievable. He would do anything to carry everyone along, including his epic diagrams on d board. A man I admired because I saw true Christianity in him... Anyways, God knows best, Heaven can't wait to have the good ones. May his soul R.I.P
He was passionate towards his students and patients. I can vividly recall one morning when we were in his clinic how he attended to a 22 years old Primip who was very pale and could not do PCV, how we had to donate money to assist the woman. We look forward to that glorious day when death will be swallowed up in victory then we shall be bold to say, oh death where is thy sting? Rest in Peace Prof JU Onakewhor.
