Nigerians react to Oyakhilome’s messy divorce

The media was on Sunday awash with reports that Mrs. Oyakhilome had filed a suit at Divorce Section A, Central Family Court, First Avenue House, High Holborn, London, UK on the grounds of “unreasonable behavior” and ”adultery”, against her husband, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

And so far, Nigerians have reacted to the crisis by going on social media to express their shock and disbelief.
While some condemned the crisis, others had encouraging words for both parties.
Reacting to the development, a certain Briareios, who claims to be an insider on facebook, said “According to people in the know, family members o, they have been separated for fifteen years. They were just saving face for the sake of the ministry but it looks like the wife has had enough”.
Another facebook user Joel said “the crisis only shows that men of God are also human beings.
“This will only show that we are all humans- Pastors, Reverends, Bishops and so on. All the same, the story is quite disturbing bearing in mind that churches and mosques are the places we look up to in this part of the world as places where mentors for our younger generations shall come from. The wife should have had this in mind and spared the country and our society of this embarrassment by walking away quietly. That of course would have been a sacrifice as a Christian. Christianity teaches us that whatever situation we find ourselves is a way of bearing the cross. Both of them should as a matter of urgency reconcile to save their followers and members of this huge embarrassment.”
Also reacting, one Kayode Olusola, said he was not surprised that weighty allegation like adultery is rocking Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s family.
Olusola said he had had course to express doubt over the man of God since his “infamous” position on masturbation.
“This is a person who claimed masturbation is not a sin. I think what is happening now is another confirmation of what many of us have said even before now”, he said.
In his own reaction, a commentator on the online platform, Nairaland, Sammy Johnson, said “I am not surprised about this news. Christ Embassy is a very promiscuous church. Most of the female members dress like they are in clubs and most of the guys attend the church to chase women. There is no dressing code and I see guys wearing earring and braiding their hairs in Christ Embassy. I used to attend that church in my campus and there is a lot of fornication going on in that church. But Pastor Chris messed up if he really cheated on his wife because he has a very beautiful and educated wife. why would any sane man cheat on that kind of wife?”
Agreeing with Sammy, another Nairaland user, Hopelink1 said “I am not surprised at what I read today. The man does not have respect for the body of Christ. He shunned the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN leaders when they wanted to broker peace between himself and Chris Okotie when they were having a face-off. Pastor Adeboye, Bishop Okwonkwo and other PFN leaders were shocked when he ignored their call. He even said he was not under PFN”, Johnson noted.
A Facebook user, Cecilia Popoola, described the development as a machination of the devil to dampen the spirit of Christians in the country.
“When a man of God of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s status and his wife, Anita failed to find a way of resolving their marital problem amicably, what that means is that the devil is determined to deal a devastating blow on the children of God.
“This calls for a serious prayer. Christians must unite in prayer on behalf of this family for God to intervene. The marriage must not break”, she declared.
In his own reaction, Samuel Whesu, a member of the Christ Embassy on the church’s facebook page said “it is quite unfortunate that this is happening to the family. One major lesson we can learn from this scenario is that nobody has all it takes to make a marriage work. The fact that you are a man of God does not make you immune to marital crisis. People must realize this and stop gloating over the issue. No sane person will rejoice over another person’s marital crisis”, he posited.
Ogboh Sandra, also reacting on Facebook, said “The report has been on for some time and one would have expected that the couple would have managed the situation well before getting to this point. It is not only about their family alone, it is about their flock, it is about Christians generally. Ministers of God of their repute are not expected to send such wrong signal about marriage because marriage is an institution ordained by God and as such it must not be brought to disrepute by children of God”.
An anonymous observer, who reacted to our previous report of the story, said “Please Anita sheathe your sword….if Hillary Clinton can forgive her husband’s alleged infidelity, why not you who is a crusader of the Gospel…pls don’t give opportunity to the devil to discredit the call of God in your ministry. It is a redeemable situation that can be settled amicably, assuming what we are hearing and reading are true”.
While another person, Baby, argued that “If it was a woman who committed adultery, would you have given the same advice? U people don’t know how much women tolerate in marriages yet u expect the woman to always forgive…. Men should also realise that some women out of fustration too commit adultery……if u can truthfully say that pastor Chris should forgive Anita if it was the other way round then by all means I support you, but if not she has a right to leave if she is tired….. They have been living apart and she has to move on and look for love too….. If pastor Chris is satisfying himself sexual she also has needs…”

Someone also said “Mere visiting a Christ Embassy church or seeing its members, your heart will be forced to think about séx. How can a church allow people to wear micro-mini skirts with big bosoms and nípples
almost falling out? Why won’t the woman suspect the man of adultery? She’s a woman and she knows how decent women should dress. One pastor said ‘Christ Embassy is a social club’ where the name of Jesus is just mentioned. Well i dont know how true; but it is bad to allow ladies to wear just pants to church in the name of vigil and not expect the women to suspect the men(their husbands): dressing matters in marriage, dressing matters in heaven: Jesus did not come to make people Unclad and Unclad by faith, He came to make us all holy by faith”
