How Premier League clubs spent record £835m on transfers in summer window

Di Maria-LVG 1
By the time the 2014 summer transfer window closed by 11pm on September 1, Premier League clubs had spent £835m, smashing the record for spending on transfers.
Manchester United were the biggest spenders, with a record for an English club of £150m spent.
According to Deloitte, the total was almost twice what Spanish clubs shelled out this summer. The amount is also more than £200m more that £630m Premier League clubs spent in 2013.
“This summer transfer window has again been one of records, with Premier League clubs spending more than in any previous transfer window,” Dan Jones, partner in the sports business group at Deloitte, said.
“This summer has also seen the highest gross spend in a single transfer window by a single Premier League club and a new record transfer fee for an individual player in English football [Ángel di María, £59.7m].
“We continue to see the increased resources that Premier League clubs enjoy, as a result of improved broadcast deals, translate into investment in players. Last season the average Premier League club received over £25m more in central broadcast distributions than they did in 2012-13, which has helped fuel a new record spend this summer.”
France’s Ligue 1 spent £100m, Bundesliga in Germany splashed £250m, while Italy’s Serie A paid out £260m.
