Williams reached her ninth
final at the All England Club by crushing Russia's Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-0
in a quick 48 minutes Thursday and will face fourth seed Angelique
Kerber for the title.
Kerber --
who stunned Williams in the Australian Open final to open her grand slam
account earlier this year -- found proceedings a little harder in the
second semifinal but still prevailed in two sets, 6-4 6-4, over Venus
Williams.
And with that, the German quashed chances of a fifth all-Williams final at SW19.
The
50th-ranked Vesnina -- appearing in a maiden grand slam semifinal --
probably won't want to see her in-form opponent again for a while. But
unfortunately for her they'll face off in doubles later Thursday.
Serena Williams improved to 9-1 in Wimbledon semifinals, with the lone player to defeat her being older sister Venus in 2000.
Serena struck 11 aces, 28
winners and a mere seven unforced errors. A continuation of that form
and the 34-year-old will be looking good to collect a record-tying 22nd
grand slam in the Open Era.
She won't need motivation Saturday, given that Kerber triumphed in Melbourne.
A
resilient counter-puncher who has stepped up her attacking game this
year, Kerber broke Venus Williams five times and limited her rival to
just 57% points won on first serve.
