He was said to have performed a Dilation and Curettage, D and C (popularly known as abortion) operation on Barakat who was five-month-old pregnant.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP, Leye Oyebade, who paraded the suspects, said Johnson lured Barakat to abort a pregnancy which resulted in serious complications.
The CP said the process left Barakat in critical condition at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
He said, “The long arm of the law caught up with a 26-year-old fake doctor, Akilapa Johnson, who procured a life-threatening abortion for one Barakat (surname upheld), a 23- year-old lady, who was lured to abort a five month old pregnancy.
“Shortly after the abortion, the victim developed serious complications which resulted in her being admitted at the UCH where she is presently lying ill.
“Investigation revealed that the fake doctor, a Secondary School Leaving Certificate holder, was only trained as a paramedic nurse and a first aid giver.
“In spite of his limited knowledge of medicine, the suspect was consistently treating unsuspecting patients who mistook him for a qualified doctor.
“Exhibits recovered from the suspects are two pieces of stethoscopes, two pieces of Plaster of Paris bandages, four pairs of hand gloves, injection and syringe,” the CP added.
Meanwhile, the suspect has confessed to the crime.
He admitted to the crime before newsmen, saying he had his training as a paramedic nurse in Port Harcourt. He however debunked claims he is just a Secondary School Leaving Certificate holder.
He said, “It was one Azeez that brought Barakat to my house for the abortion. It was after taking some pills that she developed the complication.
“I am regretting my actions now. I am only looking for a means of survival,” the fake doctor stated.
