Doctor's arrest.....We are protesting

Private doctors, under the aegis of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of
Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, have called for the release of Dr Olafisoye Odunayo from the police detention.According to the state Chairman of AGPMPN, Dr Jide Arigbagbuwo, Odunayo, who works at the Awoyaya Hospital, Ibeju-Lekki, was arrested in a disgraceful manner after the death of one Mrs. Juliet Williams from complications that arose during a Caesarian Section at his hospital.Arigbabuwo stated that Odunayo, who operated on the deceased who had pre-eclampsia, was treated like a criminal in the area where his practice was located and in the full glare of his other patients. He said, “Alleged cases of medical negligence or petitions by aggrieved patients and their relations by law areto be reported to and investigated by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, not the police.“The relations of the deceased, who felt aggrieved, reported the case to the police who came to arrest Dr Odunayo. The doctor spent about two weeks in detention and was released on bail with the condition toreport periodically to the Elemoro Police Station over an offence they can’t even defend.“Barely three weeks after the bail, he was re-arrested by another set of police officers purported to be from Abuja on the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police.“We will no longer tolerate the police infringing on the fundamental humanrights of doctors. We call for the immediate release of Odunayo and an investigation into the cause of death through the MDCN.”
