Thousands of Pro-Biafra activists stormed the streets of Enugu on Sunday, protesting the detention of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu .The group, comprising both men and women, as well as youths and the middle-aged, demanded the immediate release of Kanu, who is also the director of the pirate radio channel, Radio Biafra.The secessionists equally demandedan immediate recognition of Biafra asa sovereign state.The protest commenced in the morning, with the
Read moreagitators marching through all the major streets of the Coal City.They chanted anti-Federal Government songs, and expressed displeasure over Kanu’s continued incarceration.They vowed that the agitation will notcease until Biafra was finally actualised.However, our correspondent observed that the protest has been peaceful as of the time of filing this report.The IPOB members did not confront the police and operatives of other security agencies, who closely monitored the protest.A team of policemen in patrol vehicles drove behind the protesters.Also, motorists were allowed to ply the roads without any confrontation.Our correspondent equally observed that some residents, who were making their way to different churches within Enugu metropolis when they ran into the protesters, abandoned the plan to go to church and instead, joined the protest march.Some others who met the group while returning from church also joined, swelling the number of the protesters.Among the protesters, several individuals were seen holding Bibles.The agitators intermittently chanted “We no go gree, we no go gree,” among other songs.The protesters were still on the streets as of the time of filing this report.There were indications that the security agencies anticipated troublefrom the pro-Biafra activists.Our correspondent observed that security was beefed up around the Government House Enugu, the houseof assembly complex, as well as the state civil service secretariat.Combat ready military personnel were seen manning the gates of the Government House.The security operatives were equally positioned in strategic locations within the city.The road around the 82 Division armybase in Enugu was closed to traffic.Stern looking, heavily armed soldiers were seen diverting vehicles from theenvirons of the military base.As of the time of filing this report, thepolice has not arrested any of the protesters.Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, told our correspondent that no arrest had been made.“There has been no arrests, the protest has been peaceful,” Amaraizusaid, when contacted by our correspondent.It would be recorded that pro-Biafra protests, fuelled by the detention of the leader of IPOB, Kanu, had earlier been recorded in other cities in the South-East and South-South, including Onitsha, Asaba, Port Harcourt and Abakiliki.Some of the agitators arrested duringthe protest in Port Harcourt were taken to court on treason charges.
