Senegal’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia on Thursday, means that no African country will be playing in the 2018 World Cup round of 16.
Since the 1986 finals in Mexico, at least one African country has made it through to the knockout stages – even when there were only three African teams in the field.
Although they finished level on points with Japan, it is the Asians who will progress because of fair play – Japan collected fewer yellow cards than Senegal.
All the three North African countries that qualified were eliminated after two rounds of fixtures.
