World Cup 2018: All 5 African teams eliminated in group stages

Senegal’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia on Thursday, means that no African country will be playing in the 2018 World Cup round of 16.

It is the worst return for Africa, since the 1982 edition of the tournament in Spain.
Since the 1986 finals in Mexico, at least one African country has made it through to the knockout stages – even when there were only three African teams in the field.
The Terranga Lions were the continent’s last hope, after Nigeria was dumped out by Argentina on Tuesday night.
Although they finished level on points with Japan, it is the Asians who will progress because of fair play – Japan collected fewer yellow cards than Senegal.
All the three North African countries that qualified were eliminated after two rounds of fixtures.
