Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that urinary tract infection could be easily contracted when women indulge in harmful lifestyle.
He added that good personal hygiene coupled with other healthy lifestyle of an individual could help women in preventing urinary tract infection.
He said: “A change in position during sex may help reduce the possibility of being infected because it reduces the friction on the urethra.
“Too frequent and intense sexual intercourse could result to it.
“The use of diaphragms and un-lubricated condoms are contributory factors.”
Abdullahi explained that urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection that occurs when bacteria invades the urinary tract system.
He said the infection could spread and enter the urinary tract through the urethra.
The expert said the use of Vulva perfumes, diabetes, pregnancy, menopause and presence of blockage in the urinary tract, among other biological abnormalities, could also cause urinary tract infection.
Abudullahi said holding urine for too long could also cause urinary tract infection, stressing that the longer you wait the more the bladder stretched and could get weakened.
He said that intake of water as a preventive measure against urinary tract infection should be encouraged.
He said: “Frequent taking of vitamin C supplements helps reduce chances of getting urinary tract infection.
“The use of cotton panties with a cotton crotch also reduces the chances of infection.
“The use of condom, use of lubricants is very important in the prevention of urinary tract infection.
“Complete urination before and after sex and cleaning of the genitals before sex is key.”
The physician said the treatment for urinary tract infection involves the use of antibiotics for a short period of time prescribed by a specialist. (NAN)
