Nigerians
have been called upon to remain vigilant so as to guard against a
re-entry of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD into the country. This
call was made by the Abia State chairman of the Nigerian Medical
Association, NMA on Monday in Umuahia, the state capital at the opening
ceremony of the 2014 physicians week.
“Even as the World Health
Organisation declares Nigeria Ebola free, we all need to remain vigilant
against the re-entry of the EVD into our country.
“We need to
remind our people that greater attention to hand washing and
environmental cleanliness underlines good health and must continue even
after EVD.’’
Dr.
Uwa Onwuchekwa described the theme of the celebration, ‘Fight Against
Ebola Virus Disease’, as very timely, saying what Nigeria achieved with
the containment of Ebola speaks volumes of what the country can achieve
if its people work together.
‘’It shows that together we stand, divided we fall.’’
Calling
on members of the association to give peace a chance in the health
sector, Dr. Onwuchekwa counselled members, saying: “We must abide by our
calling and training to give peace a chance in the healthcare system.
Enough of unnecessary struggle and strikes. Let us work together for the
benefit of our people.’’
“Your job is a calling, it is not like
any other job; it is an ultimatum God has charted for you, a course of
action to assist Him in the act of creation. This automatically imposes
an obvious challenge on you; so you shall at all times be above board”,
he said.
