The intruders reportedly broke in the house in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg, at around 20:00 (18:00 GMT) on Sunday and killed the 27-year-old who was with his girlfriend at the time. The two men demanded mobile phones and valuavles, while a third man stayed outside.
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, told a press conference that Meyiwa was shot once in the upper body, as he moved towards the door. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
A reward of 250,000 rand (£14,000; $23,000) has been offered for information about the suspects. Police descriptions say one of them is tall, dark-skinned and slender with dreadlocks, while the other is said to be short, dark-skinned and well-built.
