The Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said the COVID-19 pandemic has taught the country to strengthen its health system.
Ehanire said this at the presentation of
personal protective equipment, antiseptic soaps, Face masks and other
consumables to the Federal Government through the Federal Medical
Stores, Oshodi.
He was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr Wasiu Adeyemo.
Ehanire said it was unfortunate that the pandemic caught the country and other developed nations unawares.
“Nobody actually prepared for this
pandemic; it has been a challenge for countries all over the world. I’m
not aware of any government that is capable of handling the challenge of
managing COVID-19 cases alone. What we need to learn is to strengthen
our health care system. I believe we need to learn a lot from this
pandemic as a country.
“I think to the best of my knowledge,
the government is learning, everybody is learning, health institutions
are learning, we need to change a lot of things so that at the end of
the day, the purpose for which our hospitals are set up are met. The
Federal Government, within the limit of resources at their disposal, has
tried their best to manage the pandemic,” Ehanire said.
The President, Nigerian Representatives
of Overseas Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, Mr Femi Soremekun, said there
was the need for the public and private sector to unite in the fight
against COVID-19.
He said, “As an association, we felt
there is the need to contribute towards the fight against COVID-19
pandemic. Our members are also contributing their quota to the
development of COVID-19 vaccine all over the world.”
