China ends Wuhan lockdown, where Coronavirus emerged, after 11 weeks

After 11 weeks of lockdown, China lifts lockdown on Wuhan city, the birthplace of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.
For the first time since January 23, 11 million residents have been allowed to leave their homes in Wuhan China without special authorization for the first time in more than 10 weeks.

Anyone who has a “green” code on a widely used smartphone health app is now allowed to leave, Train, road and rail connections have now been re-established.
Chinese authorities have credited these measures with a downturn in infection rates, and the vast majority of cases are now being reported outside of China.
Last month, when Wuhan reported its first full week with no new infections, shopping malls were re-opened. Some people in “epidemic-free” residential compounds have also been allowed to leave their homes for two hours.

Wuhan’s reversal is a powerful symbolic victory for China that will be closely watched by the rest of the world, even as the contagion continues to spread quickly elsewhere — including in the United States, which is approaching 400,000 known infections. It may offer a window into how other places begin to restart damaged supply chains and return to a semblance of normalcy.
