Death why....just taking all our finest coaches.....Former Super Eagles coach and NFF Technical Director, Amodu Shuaibu has died in his sleep just three days after the death of Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi. A statement released by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) this morning reads:

"NFF Technical Director, Amodu Shuaibu has died at the age of 58. The four - time Coach of the Super Eagles complained of chest pains on Friday night and died in his sleep. RIP Amodu Shuaibu's death comes three days after that of former Super Eagles Captain and Coach, Stephen Keshi."

A former coach of the Golden Eaglets, Godwin Izilein, says the death of the National Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Shuaibu Amodu, is a mystery to him. The former Super Eagles chief coach was pronounced dead Saturday morning in Benin. Shuaibu-Amodu Izilein said on Saturday in Benin that he was with Amodu until about 9 p.m. on Friday, and they had agreed to meet again by 10 a.m. on Saturday. The coach, who wept while speaking said: “I don’t just know what is happening anymore. We were together last night and he complained of nothing. “He was hale and hearty. I got him a driver and he was happy with it. I even went with him to the Commissioner of Police’s office to sort out some family issues last night. “He only said he was hungry and I told him to go home to eat while I left for home too. It was then we agreed to meet again this morning with the driver I got him. “I was woken up this morning by a call from his brother that they didn’t know what was happening to Amodu. “I rushed to the Central Hospital and searched all the wards but did not find him, only for me to be told his lifeless body was in the morgue of Stella Obasanjo Hospital. “I am in a trance. Amodu was a great guy. Seeing his body in the mortuary is a confirmation that he is gone. “My greatest pain or fear now is what is going to happen to the family. Amodu was more than a friend to me,” he wailed. Meanwhile, a cousin of the deceased who is also the Commissioner of Information in Edo, Kazeem Afegbua, said Amodu died in his sleep at about 4 a.m. on Saturday. He said Amodu who led prayers before the family went to bed Friday night only complained of chest pains and a doctor was called to the house to check him. “He was checked and certified okay and they all went to bed. “He was actually a BP (high blood pressure) patient and his BP last (Friday) night when the doctor checked was 140/100. The doctor only warned him to stop fasting. “After the prayers, he went to bed but asked that he should be wakened up at 4 a.m. to prepare for the fasting. “It was around 4 a.m. when they tried to wake him to prepare for the fasting that they saw him dead. That was all. He didn’t wake up,” Afegbua said. NAN reports that Amodu’s body will be moved to Okpella Saturday morning for burial according to Muslim rites.

 

Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde has expressed shock following the sudden death of Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director Amodu Shuaibu. His death comes just three days after his former colleague Stephen Keshi passed on. The former FIFA and CAF instructor Onigbinde said: “Right now I’m confused, I don’t know what to say.” During his coaching career, Amodu led BCC Lions of Gboko to a shock CAF Cup Winners Cup triumph in 1990

Family sources confirmed that the 58 –year old, who was confirmed as National Technical Director by the Nigeria Football Federation in October 2014, complained of chest pains on Friday night, and did not wake up on Saturday. Chairman of the Edo State Football Association, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, said that he had been informed by the Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, that the remains of the celebrated trainer had been deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City – incidentally the same facility where Keshi’s remains are kept. NFF President Amaju Pinnick was devastated: “This is another tragedy too many. We are still talking about Keshi’s death, and now Amodu is gone. I’m short of words.” One of the best coaches that Nigeria has produced, Amodu Shuaibu first took charge of the Super Eagles at the age of 36, following the departure of Dutchman Clemens Westerhorf as Nigeria left her debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the USA in 1994 at the Round of 16. His first match with the Eagles was the famous ‘Wembley Friendly’ in which Nigeria impressed but lost 0-1 to England’s Three Lions. NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who was on his way to Amodu’s home –town Okpella with NFF’s assistant director (technical) Abdulrafiu Yusuf and head of psychology Robinson Okosun for the burial on Saturday, said “This is most shocking. We are yet to recover from the death of Stephen Keshi.” Pinnick, who was on his way back to Benin City only 24 hours after returning from visiting late Keshi’s family, could only add: “Amodu’s name was synonymous with the Super Eagles. You can’t talk about the history of Super Eagles without Amodu getting prominent chapters




Amodu, who qualified Nigeria to two World Cups, in 2002 and 2010, was to have replaced Sunday Oliseh, who quit as the country’s coach in February, but he declined on health grounds. Keshi assisted Amodu when Nigeria qualified for the 2002 World Cup. Amodu rose to prominence when he guided BCC Lions of Gboko to win the Africa Cup Winners Cup in 1991. He was subsequently rewarded with leading the Super Eagles in 1994. He would take up this post at least three other times during which time he qualified the country to two World Cups. But on both occasions he was not the man in charge at the final tournaments.




-Amodu was born 18 April, 1958 in Edo State. -Amodu, a striker, played for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes. His playing career ended after he broke his leg. Coaching career -Amodu has managed a number of club sides in the past both in Nigeria and overseas. They include: Shooting Stars, BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors, Sharks F.C and Orlando Pirates of South Africa. -He first managed the Nigerian national team from April 2001 to February 2002, where he led Nigeria to the AFCON bronze medal at Mali 2002. He was later dismissed after the AFCON tournament. -Amodu later stated that his dismissal was “unfair”, and also said that, a month later, he had yet to receive a formal letter confirming his dismissal. -He was appointed Head Coach of the Nigerian national side in April 2008, and was sacked on 6 February 2010 despite reaching third place with the national side in the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola. -He was demoted to serve as the coach of the Nigerian home-based Eagles. -Amodu was appointed technical director of Nigeria’s national teams in May 2013. -He was named Technical Director of Bendel Insurance F.C in November 2013. -He was re-appointed Nigeria manager in October 2014, replacing Stephen Keshi. It was his fourth spell in charge of the country. -Keshi returned to the role two weeks later but was fired in July 2015 and Amodu took over the Eagles again temporarily. -He was replaced by Sunday Oliseh on a permanent basis later that month. -Following the resignation of Sunday Oliseh, the NFF again, appointed Amodu as the new interim coach of the national team. The new coaching crew alongside Amodu was made up of Salisu Ibrahim, Alloy Agu, Imama Amakapabo and Kennedy Boboye. -Amodu’s other accomplishments include Nigerian FA Cup titles with BCC Lions of Gboko and El Kanemi Warriors on multiple occasions.
