War against sexual harassment and assault....MUST READ

Temilolu Okeowo
Hehehehe....My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,
A lot of you are sexually harassed daily by men you come across but you aren’t even aware because of the general ignorance of the female folk of what sexual harassment entails. And also perhaps because an average female in this day and age feels that the only way for her to be acceptable in a morally-decadent and mediocre society like ours, is to be appraised on her beauty or sensuous looks.

This is the very reason most girls and women would rather have beauty than brains. Who or what do we blame for such low self-esteem? This would be discussed another day. Unfortunately beauty is fleeting and if your content is not well nurtured and groomed, you would be tossed up and down by life and end up unfulfilled. What a waste of life! We would always be held responsible for our failure or success in life. No wonder the scripture says, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

Anyway, sexual harassment won’t destroy you anymore because an enlightenment campaign would be set up and because we have God’s backing and since His kingdom is based on righteousness and justice, no lecturer found guilty would go unpunished no matter how highly placed he is. And every pharaohic lecturer is bound to drown in his own red sea just as was the 1988 case of a Gynaecology lecturer in one of Nigeria’s foremost University Teaching Hospitals who was fond of coercing female students to have sex with him. When the girls couldn’t take it anymore, they reported him to the school authorities. To start with, he was dismissed from teaching pending the outcome of the case. And subsequently had his medical license withdrawn by the then Nigerian Medical Council now known as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. So, why can’t the Council of Legal Education or the NBA, ICAN, NCS, NSE and other professional bodies do same? Perhaps, they haven’t been getting reports from victims. Now, it’s time to speak up and we are assured those at the helm of affairs would look into such cases and deal with offenders appropriately because the Girls Club is poised to ensure justice prevails and life is totally snuffed out of the dragon called sexual harassment.
If the word, lecherous, sounds strange to you, it means having or showing excessive or offensive sexual desire. You will agree with me that only a lecher would oppress female students and cause them great discomfort if they don’t give in to his advances.
Simelane (2001) defines sexual harassment as verbal comments, abuse, gestures or physical contact of a sexual nature by an individual or a group which is judged by the recipient(s) to have resulted in one or more of the following:
-Mental, physical and social discomfort.
-Interference with his/her work and/or academic performance.
This could result from the threatened downgrading of marks, demotion, withholding of privileges and/or dismissal as a result of the refusal of a reward for compliance.
-Creation of an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for him/her on campus.
The victim or the harasser may be a male or female and does not have to be of the opposite sex.
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Unwelcome Behaviour is the critical word. Unwelcome does not mean “involuntary.”
A victim may consent or agree to certain conduct and actively participate in it even though it is offensive and objectionable. Therefore, sexual conduct is unwelcome whenever the person subjected to it considers it unwelcome. Whether the person in fact welcomed a request for a date, sex-oriented comment, or joke depends on all the circumstances.
Sexual harassment includes the following:
  • Actual or attempted rape or sexual assault.
  • Unwanted pressure for sexual favours.
  • Unwanted deliberate touching, leaning over, cornering, or pinching.
  • Unwanted sexual looks or gestures.
  • Unwanted letters, telephone calls, or materials of a sexual nature.
.Unwanted pressure for dates
.Unwanted sexual teasing, jokes, remarks, or questions
.Calling a girl or woman “sweetie”, “baby”, “honey” etc.
.Whistling at someone
.Cat calls and leering
To be continued.
Are you still engaging in pre-marital sex? Each act devalues you! Your wonders are waiting to start. God is waiting for you to become a Secondary virgin! You are most welcome on board. The chastity campaign train and Girls Club is open for all girls and ladies. Please text your name, age, school or occupation and State of domicile to 07086620576.
The Girls Club of Nigeria is aimed at influencing a positive change in the female folk and re-orientating the Nigerian girl. Amongst other things, to promote and enhance the development of girls by instilling a sense of self-worth, competence, usefulness, belonging and influence while of course restoring traditional moral values and encouraging the girls to toe the paths of righteousness. If this generation can make amends, the next generation will come out clean. Don’t you think so? I love you all and I think you are all wonderful sisters!
