As the naion counts down to Saturday’s presidential election, leaders of
the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, are meeting with
the main contenders in Abuja.
According
to a Punch report, ECOWAS Chairman, President John Mahama of Ghana and
the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Desire-Kadre Ouedraogo, are in a
meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Wing of
the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.
The
report also say the delegation is billed to meet with the presidential
candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari
later in the day, though at a different venue in Abuja, with a similar
meeting expected to be held with the Chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega.
It
was further reported that the meetings were meant to extract
commitments from the contenders and the nation’s authorities that the
elections will be credible and hitch-free.
“This
election is of interest, not only to Nigerians but also to the
international community. ECOWAS, as a regional organisation, cannot but
be interested in the smooth conduct of the polls. That’s why the
leadership is engaging in this last-minute interventions,” a government
official said.
