Delta State has become the first in Nigeria to procure three Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, a landmark investment aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the state.

 

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, disclosed this on Monday in Asaba. He said the initiative, approved at the last State Executive Council meeting, reflects Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to providing quality diagnostic services across all three senatorial districts.

 

According to him, the MRI machines will be installed at the Central Hospital, Warri (Delta South), Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara (Delta Central), and Asaba Specialist Hospital (Delta North).

Delta Records Sharp Drop in Maternal Mortality, Moves Against Errant Health Workers

 

Delta State has recorded a significant reduction in maternal mortality, with figures dropping from over 200 to less than 120 per 100,000 live births, according to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme.

 

Onojaeme disclosed this on Saturday at Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area, during the flag-off of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII) Project Action Plan. 

He expressed optimism that the programme would further reduce maternal and child deaths in the state.

 

While commending most health workers for their dedication, Onojaeme revealed that some had been sanctioned for extorting money from pregnant women and children under five, despite the state’s free healthcare policy for these groups.

 

“Health workers in the state have done well, but in every twelve, there is a Judas. We have received reports of some collecting money from pregnant women and children under five for drugs, while still forwarding the bills to the government for payment,” he said.

 

According to him, several workers have already been dismissed while others were demoted for similar offences. 

He assured that monitoring would continue to ensure that funds released for maternal and child healthcare were properly utilised.

 

Onojaeme emphasized that all pregnant women in Delta State are entitled to free healthcare until delivery, while children under five also receive free medical treatment. 

He encouraged residents to report any health worker demanding payment, adding that the phone number of the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Health Monitoring would be made public for such reports.

 

In his remarks, the representative of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. John Ovuoraye, pledged Federal Government support to states in tackling maternal and neonatal mortality. 

He noted that 172 local government areas across 33 states had been identified as high-risk zones, including five in Delta—Ndokwa East, Ughelli North, Aniocha North, Udu, and Sapele.

 

Ovuoraye added that the MAMII Project, backed by President Bola Tinubu, is being implemented in collaboration with USAID, WHO, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank, and several European partners.

 

The event featured the presentation of the MAMII plaque to Delta State and the inauguration of a task force to drive the project’s action plan.

Omiwa Foundation Medical Outreach in EJEME ANIOGOR COMMUNITY 

Overview
The Omiwa Foundation held a comprehensive medical outreach in Ejeme Aniogor to improve access to basic and preventive healthcare. The event delivered patient-centered services across several departments — consultations, pharmacy, dental, laboratory, and eye care — and prioritized respectful, culturally appropriate care for all age groups.

Consultation / General Clinic
A team of volunteer clinicians and nurses ran the general consultation tents, performing triage and focused assessments for adults and children. Services included history-taking, physical examinations, diagnosis of common conditions (malaria, URIs, hypertension, musculoskeletal complaints, minor skin conditions), basic wound care, maternal-child health screening, and health education. Patients received individualized treatment plans, counselling on follow-up care, and referral slips for cases needing higher-level care.

Pharmacy / Medication Dispensing
A staffed pharmacy point provided free or subsidized medications aligned to diagnoses made at the consultation tents. Medications were dispensed with clear verbal instructions and printed dosages where needed. The pharmacy team emphasized drug safety — including interactions, adherence, and when to seek urgent care — and maintained a simple record of medicines issued to support follow-up and auditing.

Dental Section
The dental team offered oral health screening, basic procedures, and education. Services commonly provided included oral examinations, dental scaling and cleaning, temporary fillings, painless extractions for hopeless teeth, and provision of oral hygiene advice (brushing technique, fluoride use, diet counselling). The dental station also identified patients needing more complex restorative or surgical care and issued referral information to local dental services.

Laboratory Services
On-site point-of-care testing supported rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Typical tests performed included malaria rapid diagnostic tests, and glucose checks. Laboratory staff ensured proper specimen handling, accurate documentation of results, and prompt communication of abnormal findings to the clinical team. The quick-turnaround lab results enabled immediate, evidence-based treatment decisions.

Eye Section / Ophthalmology Screening
The eye care station provided visual acuity screening, basic eye examinations, and dispensing of reading or distance glasses when available. Common findings — such as refractive error, conjunctivitis, or cataract suspicion — were identified and counseled. Patients requiring surgical or specialist ophthalmic care received referral letters and information about partnering eye-care facilities for follow-up.

Community Education & Preventive Activities
Throughout the outreach, teams ran short health talks and demonstrations on topics like malaria prevention, maternal-child health, sanitation, oral hygiene, and medication adherence. 

Logistics, Safety & Data
Care was delivered with attention to infection control, record-keeping, and respectful patient flow. A basic register captured demographics, diagnoses, tests done, and medicines dispensed to support monitoring and any necessary follow-up.

Impact & Next Steps
The outreach improved access to essential services for residents of Ejeme Aniogor, treated immediate health needs, and linked patients to ongoing care. Recommended next steps include planned follow-up clinics, confirmation of referred patients’ access to specialist care, and local capacity-building sessions (e.g., community health worker training, basic first aid).
