Gift Udeze, the mother of 19-month-old boy, Obinna Udeze, who was
allegedly flogged by his teacher at the Arise and Shine Nursery and
Primary school in Delta state has rejected claims made by doctors that
the bbay may have died as a result of excessive stooling and vomiting
Doctors who attended to Obinna before he died spoke with Channels TV and gave accounts of his condition while he was with them.
Dr Johnson Etolue of the Life Value Hospital Asaba who was the first to treat Obinna after he was allegedly flogged by his teacher, said;
''He was admitted in his hospital on account of severe stooling, vomiting and fever of five days duration. There was this alleged information that the child was flogged in school before presentation but on physical examination, there was no obvious bruises on the body. You may notice some caning marks on the child's body''
Obinna's condition worsened at Life Value hospital and was then referred to the Federal Medical Center Asaba where he died. The Chief Medical Director, Dr Victor Osituma, said
''That baby was brought at about 10am and after taking the history and he was examined and found to be comatose. That baby didn't spend about 15 minutes here before he passed on. From all the examination and findings, the diagnosis at the time was a case of Gastroenteritis.''
The bereaved mother however refuted this claim made by the doctors.
According to her, the diaper Obinna wore until he died had no stool in
it.
No! Obinna was in Life Value from Thursday till Saturday morning. He was wearing the same pampers he was wearing eben in the FMC till he gave up the ghost. There was nothing. Even the pampers that was removed from the mortuary is still with me because they gave us the clothes, the pampers, the top he was wearing. If a child is stooling, it should be visible inside the pampers''
The state police command says it is awaiting the autopsy report before taking its next line of action.
Meanwhile, the accused teacher is still in police custody.
