FINALLY Eguavoen steps down as Super Eagles coach after AFCON 2021 exit

Eguavoen steps down as Super Eagles coach after AFCON 2021 exit

Austin Eguavoen has left his role as the interim coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria after the team were eliminated from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

The Nigerian squad lost 1 - 0 to Tunisia in the Round of 16 on Sunday night, January 23, after Youssef Msakni found the net with a long-range shot in the 47th minute of the game, which knocked the Super Eagles out of the tournament and ended Eguavoen’s hopes of keeping the job on a permanent basis.

Before the defeat, Eguavoen had led the three-time champions to three straight wins against Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau in the Group stage.

In a post-match press conference, Eguavoen said that he has decided to return to his role as the Technical Director of the NFF.

“What happens next is that; I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the NFF, I will go back to my position and allow the Federation make a decision on the way forward.” Eguavoen said.

Eguavoen stepped in after Gernot Rohr was sacked in December. However, the NFF announced Jose Peseiro as the new permanent coach before the AFCON kicked off.

Attention will now turn to the World Cup play-offs against Ghana fixed for March.
