US is ready to help Nigeria identify Boko Haram sponsors - US Ambassador says

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, said her country is prepared to partner with Nigeria to identify the sponsors of Boko Haram and extremism in the country.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, August 30, she said partnering Nigeria to identify sponsors of Boko Haram was something the U.S. was very eager to do.

She added that she had had at least three conversations in the last two months on this subject, but said she would not go into details.

She said: "That is something we are very eager to partner Nigeria on. I have had at least three conversations in the last two months on this subject. I won’t like to go into details.

"I hear people making the analogy with Afghanistan a lot, it does not match up. When you listen to what President Biden said on how troops went to Afghanistan in the first place, it was because they were in a horrible tragedy, over 3,000 Americans were killed.

"That is a different construct. The sovereign nations who have had strong bilateral relations. I don’t actually think the two match up."

She said that the U.S. had remained committed to support Nigeria fight insecurity.

Leonard added that the U.S. government was also committed to supporting democracy and economic programmes of the government through the embassy.

The country is sinking. The NDA attack is just the elementary part, the secondary part of it is still coming - Mbaka

Spiritual director of Adoration Ministries, Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Ejike Mbaka has reacted to the attack at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) which led to the death of two military officers and abduction of another.

Mbaka who reiterated that the arrest of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu will not solve challenges the country is facing, described the NDA attack as the elementary part, adding that the secondary part is still coming.

He said;

“Did you not hear that yesterday (Saturday), bandits entered into our most secured place in this country, Nigerian Defence Academy? The NDA, the impenetrable place in Nigeria and killed some Nigerian military officers.

“And people are still talking of Father Mbaka and Adoration. And some Catholics are still attacking the worship of Blessed Sacrament through adoration; what are they going there to do?  The country is sinking just as I told them last time. The arrest of Nnamdi Kanu; will it solve any problem? Will it stop any agitation? Now, the attack on the NDA; is it Nnamdi Kanu now?

“Is it not better he is released. Since he is still under their custody and NDA could be perforated, violated and mesmerised, what is the hope of this country if it can happen in Nigeria Defence Academy? Where else is safe?

“As I told you people last two months that what you are seeing is just the beginning of the trouble and that the main trouble is coming. This one that they did (NDA attack) is just the elementary part of it. The secondary part of it is still coming.

“I am only asking God to intervene because of what is happening in Afghanistan right now; if God is not ready to help us, Nigeria’s situation will be worse in the future. You are free to attack Father Mbaka and criticise me, that one is your problem.

“I am doing my prophetic work, and I don’t need apology or affirmation or support or approval from anybody apart from the Holy Spirit who sent me on this risky assignment. Even if I want to stop it, I can’t even stop it.”

2023: Amaechi opens up on ‘deal’ between Buhari, Tinubu

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has reacted to speculations that President Muhammadu Buhari and former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu had a pact on the 2023 presidency.

The circulation of the claim dates back to the months before the 2015 general elections.

A source hinted that after Tinubu was dropped as All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate to douse opposition to a Muslim-Muslim ticket, a deal on 2023 was agreed with Buhari.

Nigeria’s Southern states and the incumbent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) then accused the APC of an Islamization agenda.

Power brokers rallied, calmed Tinubu and conceded the selection of Buhari’s running mate to him.

Former Lagos Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Yemi Osinbajo was picked ahead of Ekiti Governor, Kayode Fayemi.

Before the 2019 polls, the President was said to have re-assured the Jagaban of Borgu of the ticket.

Weeks later, Tinubu invited Bisi Akande, former Osun Governor and APC first National Chairman to join him on a visit to the Presidential Villa.

Tinubu, it was gathered, asked Buhari to restate his promise which the President allegedly affirmed. It is believed that the meeting took place in January 2018.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Amaechi stated that he was not privy to details of the alleged agreement.

The former Rivers Governor said he was not sure if Buhari and Tinubu held such a private meeting.

He added that as the Director-General of APC Campaign Organisation, he never witnessed such a decision.

“But if there was a private meeting between President Buhari and our leader, Tinubu, I wouldn’t know.

“If it was a public APC meeting and I was not there, then something must be wrong. I was not told that there was an agreement that power should be handed over to Tinubu”, Amaechi added.

Taliban murder Afghan singer, Fawad Andarabi after his town was recaptured by the insurgents

Taliban murder Afghan singer, Fawad Andarabi after his town was recaptured by the insurgents

The Taliban have reportedly killed an Afghan singer, sparking concerns that the insurgents will return to their oppressive rule.

Fawad Andarabi was shot and killed on Friday in the Andarabi Valley, for which he was named, his family said on Sunday.

His area,  Baghlan province, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Kabul, was recaptured by the Taliban on August 15.

Andarabi's son Jawad told the Associated Press that the Taliban had previously come to his father's home and searched it, even drinking tea with the musician. But something changed on Friday.

He was innocent, a singer who was only entertaining people,' Jawad said. 'They shot him in the head on the farm'.

Jawad said he wants justice and that a local Taliban council promised to punish his father's killer.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the AP that the insurgents would investigate the incident, but said he had no other details on the killing.

Andarabi played the ghichak, a bowed lute, and sang traditional songs about his birthplace, his people, and Afghanistan as a whole.

A video shared online showed him during one performance, sitting on a rug and surrounded by mountains as he sang.

'There is no country in the world like my homeland, a proud nation,' he sang. 'Our beautiful valley, our great-grandparents' homeland'.

Masoud Andarabi, former Afghan minister of the interior, wrote in a Twitter post alongside the video: 'Taliban's brutality continues in Andarab. Today they brutally killed folkloric singer, Fawad Andarabi who simply was bringing joy to this valley and its people.

'As he sang here 'our beautiful valley….land of our forefathers…' will not submit to Taliban's brutality.'

Andarabi's slaying also drew responses from the international community, with Karima Bennoune, the United Nations special rapporteur on cultural rights, writing on Twitter that she had 'grave concern' over the killing.

Agnes Callamard, the secretary-general of Amnesty International, also decried the killing.

'There is mounting evidence that the Taliban of 2021 is the same as the intolerant, violent, repressive Taliban of 2001,' she wrote on Twitter. '20 years later. Nothing has changed on that front.'

I don’t need to be APC chairman to be relevant - Adams Oshiomhole

I don?t need to be APC chairman to be relevant - Adams Oshiomhole

Former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, says he does not need to be the national chairman to remain relevant and serve the party.

The former Edo state governor was removed as the helmsman of the party in March 2020.

While speaking during the fundraising and investiture for Victoria Unuoarumi as the 10th President of the Rotary Club of Maitama, Abuja on Saturday, August 28, Oshiomole said he did not join the party to become chairman.

“I joined in order to form an alternative platform capable of kicking PDP out of power and that objective was achieved. It doesn’t matter the way things have gone. The primary purpose was not for me to be APC chairman'' he said

He also noted that he has no regrets that he was removed as APC chairman and that he has accepted all that happened in good faith.

Speaking about the 2023 presidential election, Mr. Oshiomhole said he is optimistic that “God will not forsake a nation of 200million people”.

While agreeing that Nigeria’s democracy is not perfect, the former Labour leader said he is certain that the nation will press on.

“I believe that God in his infinite mercy will help Nigeria to sustain its democracy and guide us, as we move towards 2023 and the country will go forward.

I want all of you to realise that I always make this point because Nigeria is much bigger than the total sum of the problems bedevilling it. So I am an optimist” the APC stalwart said

In this government, if you steal there are consequences - Rotimi Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has stated that under the Buhari-led administration, stealing is being done quietly as those caught would face the consequences.

The Minister said this, when asked about the legacy of the Buhari-led administration.. with 21 months left to rule, in an interview with Daily Trust.

Amaechi stressed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government has handled the resources of the country better than others, unlike past administrations when people with no known source of income became billionaires and were not prosecuted.

He said;

“I want Nigerians to be honest; can you openly take money in this government? I am not saying whether we are corrupt or not.

“Let us assume we are corrupt, can you openly take money in this government? In the past governments, what happened? You can take money in the streets. Corruption was so pervasive that nobody was talking about it. It was not hidden that people completely and openly displayed their wealth.

“Most of those who did that had nothing to do to show for it. They did not have a carpentry shop, but they were billionaires. They did not hide it; but here, if you are stealing, it is done quietly. I am not saying it is good, it is a sin punishable. In the previous government you could steal and you won’t be caught. If you were caught, there won’t be consequences. But in this government, if you steal there are consequences.”

My family problem is nobody?s business - Paul Okoye speaks

Nigerian singer, Paul Okoye, aka Rude Boy, has spoken after it emerged that his wife, Anita Okoye is divorcing him after 17 years together and 7 years of marriage.

Paul, one-half of the now-defunct PSquare music duo, addressed his family issues while chatting with OAP Do2tun. He also said that PSquare had to pay the price for their family issues.

Asked if he misses his twin brother since the split, the 'Audio Money' singer said he has moved on from the incident and called on the public to also do same.

He said people should learn to respect the decision of others when it comes to issues that affect them directly.

Rudeboy added that the public should also allow the "Okoye family enjoy the peace" they’re currently witnessing.

He said: "Let the Okoye family just have the peace that I think they are having now.

"I hate waking up anytime and just see people saying things you know. Whatever that happened is just a thing of choice and one thing you need to do is to try and respect people that wake up one day and say they don’t want to do anymore, okay.

"Like I always tell people, it is so unfortunate that family problem which I think is nobody’s business to know, but it’s so unfortunate that Psquare has to pay the price for it."

Afghan minister becomes bicycle courier in Germany after moving there for a better life

A former communications minister in the Afghan government is now a delivery man in the eastern city of Leipzig after moving to Germany for a better life.

Sayed Sadaat moved to Germany last December in the hope of a better future.

He said some people back home in Afghanistan criticised him for taking such a job after having served in the government for two years, leaving office in 2018, Reuters reports.

But the 49-year-old British-Afghan dual citizen said: "I have nothing to feel guilty about."

He had quit the Afghan government because of disagreements with members of the president’s circle, he said according to Reuters.

"I hope other politicians also follow the same path, working with the public rather than just hiding," he added.

Though Sadaat was mocked for leaving to take on a delivery job, those at home are now hoping to leave after the Taliban took over government in Afghanistan.

Sadaat's family and friends are hoping to join the thousands of others on evacuation flights or trying to find other routes out of Afghanistan.

Sadaat said he chose to move to Germany because he expected it to have a better economic future and a leading role in the telecom and IT sectors in the long term.

Yet, even with his background, Sadaat has struggled to find a job in Germany that matched his experience.

With degrees in IT and telecommunications, Sadaat had hoped to find work in a related field. But with no knowldge of the language, his chances were slim.

"The language is the most important part," said Sadaat.

Every day he does four hours of German at a language school before starting a six-hour evening shift delivering meals for Lieferando, where he started this summer.

HMMM.......What Buhari has done to bandits is worse than declaring them terrorists - Garba Shehu

What Buhari has done to bandits is worse than declaring them terrorists - Garba Shehu

Presidential aide, Garba Shehu has dismissed claims of preferential treatment in the handling of matters concerning bandits and other people posing threats to the nation’s stability in the Northern region of the country.

Shehu who was asked in interview with BBC Pidgin on Saturday August 28, why the Federal Government had not declared bandits and criminal herdsmen, "terrorists" or outlawed them just as it proscribed IPOB, alleged that what the Buhari-led administration has done to bandits is worse than declaring them terrorists.

He said that while there is a subsisting order by the President to shoot any bandit on sight, there is no such order against the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Shehu said;

“What the Buhari administration has done to the arms-wielding bandits is worse than being declared as terrorists.

“Do you know that there is a subsisting order by the President that any arms-wielding, AK-47 bandits should be shot on sight?

“I am saying yes, IPOB has been proscribed by law of the land, there is no shoot-on-sight order on IPOB. There is nothing to suggest that these bandits are treated preferentially.”

The presidential aide also said that progress is being made in the fight against bandits. He added;

“The Nigerian Air Force is busy bombing locations, the military is there on the ground, exchanging fire for fire, taking them out in hundreds, that is certainly not treating them (bandits) lightly.

“It is a matter of time, they will be substantially reduced and the Nigerian state will be safe all over again.

“For instance, Boko Haram are surrendering today in their thousands, this did not just happen….

“Before President Buhari [assumed office] many Nigerians could not worship on Fridays, mosques were being bombed, on Sundays churches were being bombed, motor parks and public gatherings it."

He lamented the increasing cases of COVID-19 infections in the state, adding that the government’s efforts were geared towards mitigating the spike in the number of cases.

"With what we have seen so far, COVID-19 pandemic is here to stay. This is the third wave and there is nothing that points to the fact that other waves will not come. What we are likely to see is intermittent waves of this pandemic. We are not going to shut down Edo State but we will make sure we protect all Edo citizens," he stated.

“Therefore, I have come out with the following regulations, beginning from the second week of September 2021. Large gatherings as well as high traffic public and private places will only be accessed by persons who have proof of taking at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Such people will not be allowed to worship in churches and mosques. There will be no access to banking halls and event centers without proof of vaccination at the gates,” Mr Obaseki said.

The Governor said that adequate arrangements had been made with security agencies to prevent anybody without a vaccination card from accessing any of the public places.

He said the state was aiming at vaccinating 60 per cent of its population within the next one year.

According to the governor, Edo has so far collected 6,306 samples out of which 203 cases have been confirmed while four persons have died from the third wave.
