Drug abuse: Man laments over 100 empty bottles of codeine in Abuja

Hmmm..............A Nigerian man and Twitter user @Ozo1Naija, took to the platform to raise an alarm after counting over 100 empty bottles of codeine in Abuja.

According to him, he’s not sure so many people have such ‘chronic cough’, but abusers tend to take such substances and further endangers the lives of people they come in contact with.

His tweet read;

Are We Winning This War Against Drug Abuse At All? I Walked About 300metres This Morning In Gwarinpa (Abuja) And Counted Over 100 Emptied Bottles Of Codeine And Other Substances Disposed In The Drainage Ways Of One Street. I Am Sure Not So Many People Have Such ‘Chronic Cough’
They Tend To Take These Substances And Further Endanger The Lives Of Those Who They Come In Contact With. Most Of These Drug Abusers Are Still Teenagers.
Those Who Sell These Codeine Substances Need To Be Checked. They Make So Much Profit From The Sale Of It Than They Make Selling Any Other Item They Have In Their Pharmacy.
If These Substances Especially Codeine Can Be Banned. I Guess It Will Go A Long Way To Curtail This Drug Abuse.

This is coming after the Nigerian Senate, raised the alarm that the 19 Northern states of the federation were under serious threat due to drug abuse, stating that over three million bottles of codeine syrup were consumed daily in Kano and Jigawa states.
The Senate also disclosed that across the 19 states, women, young girls in tertiary institutions, working class ladies, married, unemployed women displaced by Boko Haram insurgency, among others, were involved in drug abuse, and that in 2015 alone, over 2,205 people were arrested in North-West geo-political zone by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, over drug-related abuses.
Consequently, the Senate mandated its Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and Health to investigate the growing menace of cough and other prescriptive drugs abuse and report back to the Senate on the needed legislative interventions to combat the trend. The senators stressed that secondary school students consumed cough syrups regularly.
