Prof Ray Ozolua is a pharmacist, pharmacologist and toxicologist with over twenty years teaching and research experience. His interests have been based largely on the skills acquired in toxicology and cardiovascular pharmacology at M.Sc and PhD studies respectively. He has in recent times studied the nature and mechanisms of vascular reactivity in potassium adapted animals. The studies are aimed at explaining the role of potassium adaptation in reducing hypertension, thromboembolism and their related cardiovascular sequelae. Findings suggest that there is reduction in blood pressure and lesser tendency for vaso-occlusive disorders in potassium adapted animals. Knowledge of organ bath-based smooth muscle research has now been extended towards screening plant products for antihypertensive and antiasthmatic properties. This broad and active area of ethnopharmacology offers promise as sources of new drugs that would be useful in the management of the aforementioned diseases. Bryophyllum pinnatum, Andrographis paniculata and Garcinia kola which have been used in ethnomedicine for obstructive airway diseases have been extensively studied in his laboratory. He has also worked with herbal medicine practitioners towards evaluating the safety of their products. He is in active multidisciplinary collaboration with scientists within and outside the country. Indeed, scientists that can contribute in addressing emerging questions from his areas of research are welcomed. He is an Associate Editor of the highly rated Pharmaceutical Biology and also serves as member of the editorial board of several other journals. Prof Ozolua has served as consultant to GHAIN, PATHS-2, Medical Sciences for Health, SHOPS/USAID among others. He was actively involved in the development of the National Policy on Pharmacovigilance. He is a regularly invited keynote speaker at forums of pharmacists and other health professionals. He serves as external examiner to many universities and mentored Masters and PhD graduates. Prof Ozolua has been winner of several awards and prizes from his undergraduate days. The undergraduate awards and recognitions include UAC of Nigeria undergraduate scholarship, University of Benin undergraduate scholarship, the best graduating student in the School of Pharmacy, University of Benin and the best overall graduating student in the College of Health Sciences, University of Benin. He has been a guest of the Physiological Society of the United Kingdom. He is a member of many professional and learned societies such as Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and West African Society for Pharmacology.
