hehehehe........Victor Osimhen jumped into the spotlight at the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile.
Nigeria won the tournament for a record
fifth time in its history and also emerged as the second team to
win the title back-to-back (UAE 2013, Chile 2015) after Brazil made
it back-to-back wins at New Zealand ’99, having won their second title
in Egypt in 1997.
Osimhen hit the back of the net 10 times in Chile to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.
He won the Golden Boot and the Silver
Ball in the championship in which Arsenal midfielder Kelechi Nwakali
succeeded Manchester City’s rising star Kelechi Iheanacho.
Osimhen, who was 16 then, attracted interests from a host of Europe’s top clubs after his emergence at Chile 2015.
It was thought that Arsenal had
wrapped up a deal to sign the Nigerian prospect from the Ultimate
Strikers Academy of Lagos, but one day, out of the blue, newspapers
screamed headlines that struggling German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg
had agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the player.
Osimhen completed his move to the
Volkswagen Arena on January 1 on a reported £3m deal after he turned 18
on December 29 last year.
The teenager has revealed the reasons behind his move to Wolves instead of making Arsenal his destination.
“There were many clubs that were interested in me,” Osimhen told Bild.
“But my choice was Wolfsburg because I think that my development opportunities are highest here.
“If I had gone to Arsenal, for example, I might not have found the route to the first team so quickly.”
Wolfsburg manager Valerien Ismael says
he is delighted to have signed a player who “already has a large
presence in our attack”.
“He has to improve his physical
strength and get used to playing in Germany. We want to help him take
this step,” Ismael told the club’s official website after the unveiling
of the striker.
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr should be licking his lips at the prospect of adding Osimhen to his attacking options.
The Super Eagles boast a wealth of
attacking talents in Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Iheanacho and Watford’s Odion
Igahlo – but Rohr has revealed he holds Osimhen in awe.
The German manager has hinted that he is currently focusing his attention on the young striker at Wolfsburg.
“Victor Osimhen is having a good
beginning at Wolfsburg. I spoke with Wolfsburg manager and he said
Victor is doing very well. And who says Victor who will be playing in
the Bundesliga cannot come and play as our number nine?” the former
Gabon coach said of the forward, who won the 2015 African Football
Youth Player of the Year award.
Osimhen was denied the chance to
showcase his talents on the international stage again after Samson
Siasia omitted him from his squad for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in
Brazil, despite helping the country to qualify for the men’s football
event of the Games.
The prodigious talent’s immediate tasks
will be to score plenty of goals to help Wolfsburg, who are hovering
above the Bundesliga drop zone, avoid relegation.
It took Iheanacho and Iwobi time to
break into first-team reckoning at Man City and Arsenal, but Osimhen can
hit the ground running as under-fire Wolves manager Ismael seeks to
explore his attacking options when they resume their Bundesliga campaign
at home to Hamburg on January 21.
Emmanuel Amuneke, who was in the dugout
when the Golden Eaglets won the Chile 2015 tournament, described
Osimhen as “a player blessed with abundant talent.”
“I hope Victor continues to grow and
continues to make people happy, he’s a good player, he has to believe in
himself,” the Tunisia ’94 Africa Cup of Nations winner said.
Festus Odini, who played a key role in
the Golden Eaglets Japan ’93 FIFA Under-17 World Cup triumph, believes
Osimhen could establish himself as one of the deadliest strikers in
the world if the pacey striker takes his career seriously.
“Osimhen can become another Neymar if he
is committed. He’s deadly in front of goal like the late Rashidi
Yekini. If he humbles himself and takes his career seriously, he will
become one of the top players in the world,” Odini said.
