At least 79 people have been reported dead when a church building belonging to Reigners Bible Church collapsed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to sources, the Reigners Bible Church, located along Uyo Village Road, was filled to capacity because its pastor was being consecrated as a Bishop, when the tragedy occurred.
“Pastor Akan Week was being consecrated today so the programme was holding inside the Church when suddenly, the whole building collapsed,” one witness said.
The witness said the Church was being renovated and upgraded because of the expected high number of guests on Saturday.
“Many people are buried under the debris as emergency workers continue rescue exercise,” he said.
Meanwhile, governor Udom Emmanuel was expected to attend the occasion, but, sources said he was not at the church when it collapsed.
"The incident occurred immediately after offertory collection, while the ordination of Apostle Akan Weeks as Bishop was the next item, according to the programme."
"We heard a strange and loud sound, then the building started falling."
"Governor Udom would have been no more, but for one of his aides who immediately pushed him out of the building.
Unfortunately, the aide was killed by the fast descending roof after he pushed the governor who fell outside."
This report is arising from an interrogation of one Miss Ediomo who narrowly escaped death at the scene.
Late Miss Peace Udoh, until her demise was a student of Linguistics Department, University of Uyo. She died serving as an usher, upon the collapse of Reigners Bible Church, Uyo, during a service organised to mark the enthronement of Apostle Akan Weeks as Bishop.
