Hehehe...No doubt, people who use their right
hand, usually called righties, are a lot more than the few who use their
left hand, known as lefties. And in very few cases, some people are
able to use the two.
Previous studies had pointed out that
about 90 per cent of the total population are righties while the
remaining 10 per cent are lefties, with men lefties having a higher
population than women.
But beyond people’s handedness, which is
their tendency to use either their right or left hand more naturally
than the other, it appears that natural tendency influences people’s
sexuality, intelligence and behavioural and thought patterns. This
implies that the lefties and righties are different from one another in
many ways.
In
fact, a study found that apart from being more sexually active, lefties
are usually satisfied with their sex lives than those who use their
right hand.
The study, which was carried out by a
Swedish sex toy company, LELO, was designed to determine the connection
between people’s handedness and their sexuality. Out of the about 10,000
people that were surveyed, whom were asked how satisfied they were with
their sex lives, a whopping 86 per cent of left-handed people said they
were “extremely satisfied” with their sex lives, compared to a mere 15
per cent of righties.
The researchers, however, pointed out
that whilst in the womb, lefties are more exposed to testosterone, which
is a steroid hormone that stimulates development of male secondary
sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the testes, but also in the
ovaries and adrenal cortex.
They also found that the hormone makes
them more assertive, making them more dominant during sex, and that both
men and women have the tendency. But another study by the University of
Michigan, United States, pointed out that, apart from men, women that
have an increased testosterone levels are also more likely to have
better sex and more frequently too.
In yet another study by the Wayne State
University, two groups of men (lefties and righties) were assigned to
‘score’ with the same woman. After the exercise, lefties were found to
have a better performance than the righties.
In terms of intelligence variation
between lefties and righties, a study conducted by St. Lawrence
University in the US found that lefties are more intelligent because
they use the two sides of their brain, noting that in the study it
carried out, left-handed people had intelligence quotient of over 140
than their right-handed counterparts.
Also, among the high test scorers at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, it was found that about 22
per cent are lefties, signalling their intelligence, in spite of their
small percentage of 10 per cent of the population. “Given that there are
few lefties compared to righties, lefties should celebrate their
difference,” the study said.
Despite the (lefties) 1 to (righties) 10
ratio, left-handed people make up about 40 per cent of Mensa, which is
the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world. It is a non-profit
organisation open to people who score at least 98 per cent or higher on a
standardised, supervised IQ or other approved intelligence test. Beyond
that, it was found that lefties also produce genius babies and they are
able to multitask because they are able to force their brain to think
more quickly.
But what really determines people’s
handedness? Noteworthy is the fact that only human beings have been
found to have varied handedness, but some neurologists explained that
what determines people’s handedness is the hand that the baby holds to
the mouth while in the womb and another theory says that a foetus with
high testosterone while in the uterus is more likely to be a lefty.
The neurologists, according to healthland.time.com,
explained that parts of the brain responsible for thinking and
intellectual skills are centered in the left hemisphere while the
emotional and mood-related functions are concentrated in the right
hemisphere.
“This also explains why left-handed
people tend to be more vulnerable to fear and negative emotions, such as
anger. Also, left-handers have more symmetry between the right and left
sides of their brains compared with right-handers, and that can have
implications for everything from language to motor skills,” they added.
It appears there are more benefits for
being a left-handed person than the intelligence and sexual advantage.
It has been found that lefties are better athletes and more creative
because they rely on the right side of their brains more, which is used
for activities needing imagination, emotions and creativity. Also
because their brains work differently, with both hemispheres
communicating together and stimulating interaction in those parts of the
brain that deal with creativity.
It has also been said that they tend to
drink more, they are more emotionally connected and they have a better
sense of rhythm, which enables them to remember the tunes of songs
better than righties.
According to dailyinfographic.com, a
study had pointed out that left-handed men are, on the average, 15 per
cent richer than right-handed men for those who attend college and 26
per cent richer if they graduate. According to the report, lefties are
believed to reach puberty four to five months after right-handers and
that they are three times more likely to become alcoholics, compared to
righties.
The report said that if both parents are
left-handed, half of their offspring will be left-handed while two
right-handed parents only have a two per cent chance of having a lefty,
while noting that the older a mother is, the more likely she is to give
birth to left-handed children.
And on a lighter note, due to the fact
that they could handle large amount of stimuli, lefties are better at
playing video games.
In his reaction, a medical practitioner,
Dr. Rotimi Adesanya, said the intelligence of lefties could largely be
attributed to the position of the dominant side of the brain in their
own nervous system, adding that the muscular activities they engage in
enable them to release more testosterone hormone.
He said, “If you are right-handed, your
dominant side is on the left but if you are left-handed, the dominant
part will be on the right, so lefties tend to be more intelligent
because of the position of the dominant side of their brain.
“Also, they are usually involved in
active sports, which we can attribute to the increase in the level of
testosterone. The muscular activities they do can make them to release
more of it, just as testosterone is part of what makes men to be more
active than women. So, if we want to use that analogy, we can say that
lefties are more likely to have higher testosterone than righties.”
